States of Incarceration


States of Incarceration is a project of the Humanities Action Lab, a coalition of over twenty universities led by The New School in NYC.

I worked on this project for over a year while I was working at Picture Projects., an independent new media studio in Brooklyn between 2014-2016.

I led the design and art direction for the web platform.

The Design Challenge

Communicate research undertaken by over 500 individuals across 18 states.
Create entry points for visitors to provide their point of you and for new universities to join the project
Create a connection between the traveling physical exhibition and the online platform.

Concept
    • Conceptulizing the platform and its potential
    • Creating presentations for multiple stakeholders to help them articulate their wants and needs
    • Identifying core features and pages
    • Critical research towards alternate forms of representation of mass incarceration
Communications & Management
    • Participating in core team meetings with senior stakeholders.
    • Communicating with the web developer to problem solve and  trouble shoot
    • Managing timelines and web platform development
    • Writing grant proposals
    • Advising teachers and students on media production and setting guidelines
    • Managing volunteers and guiding data population
UI/UX
    • Research on responsive web design
    • Iterative information architecture maps to obtain clarity from stakeholders
